4 Pretty Little Things to Brighten Your Winter

Winter Cheer

Winter has become increasingly hard for me as I’ve gotten older….Or maybe as I’ve become a parent to a toddler? Either way, it’s easy for me to feel a little down and out of sorts during the winter months. So, I’m always on the lookout for various ways I can lift my mood when it’s cold, rainy, and dark out.

Things like exercise always, always helps me. Even a run in the rain, I’ll do it just for that endorphin release and high I feel all day afterward. Yummy, warm dinners to make and look forward to. My husband wants to try this to see if it helps. He struggles with the winter months more than I do even. But, sometimes all it takes is a bright pop of color on my nails or a pretty new plant to get me through another dark winter day. From left to right here are the links to these four lovely pick-me-ups that I’ve been eyeing to cure some of my winter blues…

Kathleen Whitaker Staple Studs / Ace & Jig Infinity Scarf (on deep discount right now too!) / Essie “Meet Me At Sunset” nail polish / A pretty plant to remind you of brighter, warmer days.

What do you do to lift your spirits through these long winter months?? I would love more ideas!

P.S. Only 8 more weeks until Spring!!!

The Best Plain White Tee’s

Perfect Plain White Tee Everlane and American Apparel

The plain white t-shirt—a wardrobe staple. Dress it up, dress it down, knot it, tuck it in, let it hang out, roll up the sleeves, layer it under a cardigan or blazer, or pair it with a skirt or jeans. You can literally wear this cotton classic with anything.

But strangely enough, this universal garment is one of the hardest pieces to find. It took me forever to find the one that felt and fit just right…

Beauty Secrets 06: Margaret Jacobsen

Margaret Jacobsen

I’ve admired Margaret and her incredible photography for quite some time now. Margaret is the kind of person that puts 200% into everything she does, from photography to mothering her two beautiful children, and won’t settle for anything less than that. She has dreams and makes them happen. She inspires me, and on top of her passion and drive, she is probably one of the most effortlessly stylish and beautiful women I’ve ever seen. I’ve always been not-so-secretly jealous of her hair and wondered how she pulls off her natural, bare faced, gorgeous look. So I was so excited when she agreed to share her beauty secrets with us! Here, she talks about the magic of apple cider vinegar, how she strives to stick to beauty products she can make and find in her own kitchen, and the most moving practice she did in front of the mirror when she was pregnant….

Words Everyone Needs To Hear

Beauty

My friend, Chelsea, is always posting these inspiring quotes from the most amazing authors on her Instagram feed. She posted this one the other day and I thought it was too beautiful not to share…

It doesn’t make sense to call ourselves ugly, because we don’t really see ourselves. We don’t watch ourselves sleeping in bed, curled up and silent with chests rising and falling with our own rhythm. We don’t see ourselves reading a book, eyes fluttering and glowing. You don’t see yourself looking at someone with love and care inside your heart. There’s no mirror in your way when you’re laughing and smiling and happiness is leaking out of you. You would know exactly how bright and beautiful you are if you saw yourself in the moments where you are truly yourself.

It gave me pause and helped me see myself in a way I never had before. I appreciated myself more and really felt beautiful after reading it.

I hope you do too, because you are. xx

Beauty Secrets 05: Chelsea Gipe

Chelsea Gipe

It would go without saying that when I first met Chelsea I thought she was one of the most beautiful people I’d ever met. I have always been curious about how she got that glowing, flawless skin, and what gorgeous lipsticks she wears. On top of being strikingly beautiful outwardly, as I got to know her and her story over the years I learned quickly that only a small portion of her beauty is because of the lipstick she wears and the oils she uses for her skin. She is one of those rare gems you don’t come across very often in life. Chelsea is incredibly affirming, empathetic, and one of the bravest people I’ve ever met. She is a constant inspiration and reminder that I can write a different, more whole story for my life, and my daughter’s, than my past afforded me. I’m so grateful for her friendship. Chelsea is also a master with words and new mama to the most darling little babe, Harper Jewel. So happy to present to you some of her beauty essentials, including a life-changing product for your brows, a foundation that will make your skin glow and has a high SPF, and the most inspiring advice on beauty and motherhood for all the mamas out there…

Beauty Secrets 04: Allegra Villella

Allegra Villella

For this weeks beauty secrets column, I talked with the stunning Allegra Villella, an awesome photographer and blogger who lives here in Portland, Oregon, with her husband and darling pug. I recently discovered her more personal posts on her journey to clearer skin using natural products and knew I would have to know her secrets! Doesn’t she look positively luminous?! Here, she explains how to get clear skin, a natural foundation that only has four ingredients in it (!), and how raw honey is good for more than just sweetening your food…

Fall Pout

Fall Lipstick, NARS and Laura Merceir

I usually wear either a bright, true red lipstick for fall but this fall, lips are going these deep, sexy berry shades that I’m loving and want to try. NARS audacious lipstick in Bette (pictured above) looks like the perfect fall color. In the past I have shied away from a dark lip because it’s always so obvious when it’s starting to fade and looks tacky to me. But, the trick I’m learning to darker lipstick is to kiss it off with a tissue after you apply it, so it’s more of a stain, and then reapply a top coat. That way it stays on a little longer, even after eating and having a few drinks.

If you’re not one for bold lip color, you’re in luck. I’ve been seeing so many nude lips this season!  The natural look seems to be widely popular right now. This Laura Mercier Creme Smooth Lip Color in Peche looks lovely.

Which would you go for this fall?

Five Ways Your Life Will Improve From Wearing This Fab Deodorant

Fat and the Moon Deodorant

I’ve been on a life-long search for the perfect deodorant. Like everyone else, I’ve wanted to find something that’s more natural and not laden with chemicals but that actually works! Believe it or not, I think I’ve finally found it: Fat and the Moon deodorant cream. It will change your life. If you’ve been on the hunt too, here are the five reasons you’re hunt is now over…

  1.  All your worries about putting nasty chemicals on your skin day in and day out can finally be put to rest. All of Fat and the Moon products are made with completely natural, organic ingredients. Many of which are home grown on the organic farm where the Fat and the Moon team reside.
  2. This formula actually works! Most of the all natural deodorants I’ve tried haven’t really worked. By noon (on a good day), my pits and everyone around me are not happy. But this one is a game changer! Fat and the Moon deodorant takes care of the stink.
  3. The scent is super mild and won’t compete at all with any other fragrance you’re wearing.
  4. Like black clothes? No problem here. “This deodorant won’t leave those chalky white streaks that make you look like you’ve had a mime in a headlock.”
  5. It lasts forever. So don’t think you’re paying $12 for stick of deodorant. A little goes a long way. This stuff has lasted me months.

I hope you’re as impressed as I am and go buy yourself a jar. Toxin-free, fresh days await you. I now want to buy all the Fat and the Moon products. Their dry shampoo and this lip and cheek stain are calling my name.

xx
