A Local’s Guide To Portland: Angela Vembar

Angela Vembar

Angela and I have met off and on, through mutual friends, all over the west coast for years now. Totally randomly, might I add. Once in Spokane, Washington, another time in Oakland, California, and then here in Portland (I think it might be as sign we need to see more of each other, Angie!). Each of these times I’ve had the pleasure of spending time with her I was struck by how comfortable I felt being around her. When she mentioned that she was studying to be a naturopathic family physician last time I saw her, I remember thinking, “Oh yeah, I’d definitely see you as my doctor.” She is super kind, relatable, intelligent, and so easy to be around. All the things I look for and want in a doctor.

Angie is a family practice physician and practices at Harbor Health Clinic in NE Portland. She sees a variety of patients, from young to older and for all kinds of reasons. From a cold to a chronic condition to fertility health. Angie has a background in naturopathic medicine, the science of nutrition, and culinary arts, and definitely utilizes her knowledge and experience in nutrition and natural medicine to help her patients. As someone who has seen naturopathic doctors throughout my life and experienced the extraordinary benefits and care that they offer, I cannot recommend Angie enough and was so happy to feature her here on my blog.

Check out some of Angie’s favorite spots around Portland, including her very own kitchen….

A Local’s Guide to Portland: Julia Herrington

Julia Herrington Eating Stories Like Grapes

I couldn’t be more pleased to introduce you to one of my best friends, Julia. She is a crazy good writer, and has impeccable taste—especially when it comes to food and booze.  I would eat/drink anything she made for me (her baked goods are spot-on delicious) and she’s one of the first people I ask if I want to try a new place to eat at or grab a drink around Portland. She’s a wealth of good things, this lady, and her guide to Portland is no exception…

A Local’s Guide to Portland: Megan Hart

Shop Summerland Megan Hart

I actually haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Megan yet. Thankfully we are remedying that soon. I am an admirer of her gorgeous shop, Summerland, and I learned more about her through other Portland artists and entrepreneurs, then stumbled upon her lovely Instagram feed, etc…The common, new way I’m meeting people these days. Take one look at Megan’s shop and it’s clear she has amazing taste and an eye for quality, and her guide to Portland is no exception.

Megan lives in the quaint, up-and-coming St. John’s neighborhood which made me even more excited, as we haven’t had the pleasure of having a local north Portlander do a Portland guide yet. Megan lets us in on all the gems in St. Johns, as well as other sweet spots in other parts of the city. Enjoy!

A Local’s Guide to Portland: Marissa Sullivan

Portland's Pretty Portland Guide

For this week’s Portland Guide I bring you Marissa of the killer blog Portland’s Pretty. I’ve been following her blog since the beginning and I am a big, BIG fan. Marissa appreciates and loves the street style of Portland, takes photos of the best looks she finds around town, Portland’s fashion shows, etc., and posts about them all on Portland’s Pretty. As you can see, her own style is pretty bangin’ as well. Marissa is fearless and has amazing energy. I admire those things about her. It is no surprise her blog has grown and become as successful as it has.

Not only does she know the style scene in Portland, but she also knows the food scene. This guide to Portland is packed with incredible places to try from fancy, authentic pizzas to the tastiest, cheapest pizzas by the slice, some of Portland’s best vintage clothing spots, good thrifting, and all the dives…Because Marissa rules Portland’s dive bars….

A Local’s Guide to Portland: Julie Everhart

Studio Olivine

I actually met Julie’s mom before I met her. Her mom is probably one of the sweetest, loveliest people I’ve ever met. When I met Julie, it was no surprise to find that the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. She’s the kind of person you wished your paths’ crossed with more.

As well as being lovely, Julie is the owner of Studio Olivine, a custom letterpress print studio located here in Portland, Oregon. Julie makes the most beautiful paper goods. She prints a variety of media from business cards and wedding invitations, to coasters, custom orders, and beyond—she does a little bit of everything. She loves collaborations and experimental projects with other artists and unique projects.I feel like any time I visit a hip, beautiful place in Portland I’m going to see her work there, whether it be the coaster I set my cocktail on or the charming little business cards at the register as I’m about to make my purchase. I’m always so impressed and inspired by Julie’s creativity and the quality of her work.

Needless to say, I was floored when she agreed to  be a part of this series and share some of her favorite spots around Portland. Not surprisingly, her value of quality and beauty translate over to her taste in food, style, and everything else….

A Local’s Guide to NE/SE Portland: Lindsay Strannigan

Rosemarried

Photo by Leela Cyd Ross for The Kitchn

This week I’m so excited to introduce you to the food-genius and voice behind one of my favorite food blogs, Lindsay Strannigan. Lindsay’s amazing blog, Rosemarried, is where she writes about all her delicious, innovative cooking adventures. She is all about simple, attainable recipes without compromising beauty and quality. Which is what I love most about her blog. I know when I go to Rosemarried to find some inspiration for dinner I’m going to find something that’s not only delicious, but also seasonal, healthy, and (sadly, what’s usually most important to me), simple.

As well as keeping a food blog, Lindsay is a freelance marketing consultant, event planner, and has established a significant presence in Portland. She serves as a Marketing Director for the Beaverton Farmers Market, is a co-host of the PDX Food Swap, and has planned events for Stumptown Coffee Roasters, Plate and Pitchfork, The Montavilla Farmer’s Market, Juliet Zulu, and Bunk Sandwiches, to name a few. Lindsay and some of her recipes have also made their appearance on The Kitchn, Huffington Post, Buzzfeed, and more.

Lindsay technically lives in NE Portland, but is really more centrally located so I let her get away with doing a little bit of both NE and SE Portland. Also, I secretly just wanted in on all her spots! I would go anywhere she told me to, especially in regards to food. Needless to say she killed it, and you’d be a fool not to read this…

A Local’s Guide To SE Portland: Catherine Harrington Clifford

Catherine Harrington Clifford

I first met Cate at the book club we’re a part of, and was instantly taken by her classy style and killer shoes, and, of course, all of the interesting things she had to say about what we were reading…

Cate currently lives in southeast Portland and is one of the few native Portlanders I know. She is an event and wardrobe stylist and a blogger. She blogs about her events/projects, and she has a wonderful series on her blog called, “Mommy + Me Monday.” This series features either her and her adorable baby girl’s style or other guest mamas and babes (Eleanor and I actually had the privilege of contributing to this series recently!) . I appreciate Cate’s aesthetic and taste, and her appreciation and eye for quality. From killer shoes to drool-worthy cocktails. So, it is with great pleasure that I show you southeast Portland through her very stylish eyes…
